I got such a kick when I heard about this (being a big fan of both the Dalai Lama and technology).
The Dalai Lama was supposed to visit Archbishop Tutu in South Africa, but because of visa issues he was not able to enter the country.
So what did he do? Joined Google+ and immediately posted a Happy Birthday video for Archbishop Tutu. Then, he planned a Google+ Hangout between the two. This was in honor of the Inaugural Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture.
What can I say, but “wow”! It seems such an oddity for a great spiritual leader to be participating in such modern technology, especially social media. However, the Dalai Lama has more than 2 million fans on Facebook and 2.5 million followers on Twitter.
If you ever get discouraged with social media and wonder if you should continue making the effort, come back to this Hangout or these videos. The Dalai Lama makes the effort, I’m sure, because it (social media) is an insanely powerful tool to connect with others.
