Accept credit card payments with your phone!

Thanks, Kathleen, for letting me know about this new technology! :)

I just found out about Square for your iPhone, iPad or Android. Sign up and they will send you a free card reader that you’ll plug into your headphone jack. Once you’re set up, you can swipe credit cards on your phone.

I’m really excited about this. I’ve been working with clients lately on how to easily accept credit card payments at events and this on the surface seems an excellent solution.

The app is free and the reader is free. The only charge is the 2.7% they deduct from swiped payments you receive. You can accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards. Funds are deposited directly into your linked checking account.

I read through the Troubleshooting and support issues, and it looks like you’ll need to have a very strong internet connection or your payment will timeout. That could potentially be a problem if you’re at a trade show or similar event where service is sometimes sketchy in convention halls.

By the way, the co-founder of Twitter is the mastermind behind Square. As of March 2011, Square is processing more than $1,000,000 a day. Here is an interesting article Technology Review by MIT:

Regardless, I defintely think it’s worth a shot and could be a significant, but affordable boost to your business.

If anyone has used Square, we’d love if you post a comment. :)
